A glorious Iron Age hillfort on the edge of the Marlborough Downs.
First occupied around 2,500 years ago and then used during the Roman occupation of the area, the fort is sited on a vantage point which affords views as far as the Cotswolds and the River Severn. The hillfort has a double ditch surrounded by unimproved chalk grassland and was the site of a battle where Cynric defeated the Britons in 556AD. There are spectacular views right across the Marlborough Downs. Its one of several hillforts situated on the Ridgeway National Trail.
There is a large car park, picnic benches and toilets. Barbury Castle is managed by Swindon Borough Council.
